Student Stacks Assistant

June - August 2021 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I liked the experience of working in Ablah Library on Wichita State campus. I love working in and being in libraries, so this job was perfect for me. At the time, my disability prevented me from performing certain tasks, but the staff were understanding and flexible with my needs and abilities.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay had been higher for the amount of work, the type of work, and the environment I was in. I love working in libraries, but Ablah Library's A/C system was not functioning the way that it should (during the summer, no less). The pay was below the bare minimum, and had I been paid 15.00/hour, I would still be working there happily!

Advice

I would say to not accept this as a permanent position, especially if you are a student on campus. Yes, it is a flexible work environment, and if you enjoy library work (like me) it will be very fun! But it does not pay a livable wage, and there are no benefits that you can receive because of the extremely low hourly wage.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - December 2021 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I liked how I can do the research and collaborate with faculty member and learn something new. Because doing research is all about being lost in the unknown, being able to puzzle up bits and pieces of missing information, and do something remarkable. I also liked how patient my faculty member was while I was getting used to doing new things like literature review, writing and analyzing the code written.

What I wish was different

I wish I has been more proactive - I tend to depend too much on the faculty member for research. I also wish that I had ended my project in the end of summer 2021 instead of rolling it over till winter break 2021 so I can spend more time on my fall classes without the research jeopardizing my ability to focus on both things - school and work - at the same time.

Advice

Get out there, put yourself out there. There is no reason to be afraid of doing research. Pick a topic that you like the most, and try to negotiate with your faculty member with the justification of why your topic makes the most sense to research. Allocate a realistic amount of hours per week to complete the research work. Most importantly, have fun!

Wildlife Technician

May - August 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I lived for 10 weeks on a ranch in remote western Kansas. I assisted with surveys for plants, insects, and birds on restored prairies. I really liked living in the country. The property I stayed at was beautiful and the wildlife view was excellent.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have lasted longer.

Advice

I would recommend that people do not judge places until they have actually visited them. I would not think that western Kansas would be very interesting. However, once you get off the interstate and explore the landscape it was really quite beautiful.

Student Assistant

July - August 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Responsibilities were simple and I got to explore all the buildings on campus that I would have never gotten the chance to otherwise.

What I wish was different

I wish they wouldn't schedule 2 sessions so soon after one another when the 2 buildings are really far away from each other. Or schedule a session too far away right before your class begins.

Advice

Punctuality is they key to everything! Also, call in early and let the supervisors know beforehand if you cannot come in.
