Guest Services Intern

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved getting to meet so many different people and work in a high stakes, high profile environment. I was able to problem pacify situations for celebrities, senators, royalty and the world's .001%. No pressure, right? But honestly- the pressure brings out the best in you as an employee, and working with um... high expectation.... people brings out the best in you as a person. You learn to deal with all people socially and professionally. I love travel, so it was great to have an oportunity to assist guests with their travel experience and show them what SF, and FS, are made of. I loved having real responsibility that affected someone other than myself. Part of my job was to make the 5 star experience just as great for the kids as it is for their parents. This included purchasing kids toys, bedding, and amenities and creating a platform for a future kids room in the hotel. I got to be a fully functioning adult!

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had a tad bit more training, but honestly, learning on the job was probably best for my development in the fast paced industry, even though it was stressful.

Advice

1. Don't be afraid to shoot the moon when applying for internships!!! I have no background in hospitality (I'm a classics major) and no contact within the Four Seasons, but I applied, went through my interviews with confidence and honesty, and I got the job. And got a raise. Don't let your major or self imposed limitations prevent you from applying to internships you think sound cool!!!! 2. Buy comfortable shoes.

Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • Westlake Village, CA

What I liked

I love that I was able to make a difference. I completed a project on excel highlighting underperforming menu items according to quantity sold and gross sales for each of the hotel's seven food and beverage outlets. I also did a financial analysis of implementing an organic food option by comparing different suppliers. The model looks at the quality of the food, the size of the supplier, price, and a few other factors, to determine the impact of implementing organic food on customer satisfaction, food cost percentage, and the selling price. This model will be used throughout the hotel’s upcoming rennovation. It was a wonderful opportunity!

What I wish was different

Internship was as expected!

Advice

Apply what you learn in school to your internship as much as you can to impress your managers!

Worldwide Sales & Marketing Intern

September 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My coworkers are SO helpful! They always encourage me to ask lots of questions and to gain as much experience as I can. I have had several internships throughout college, but none of them have given me so many opportunities to learn as Four Seasons. The office is all women, and is a very girl-power environment - which is much different than any type of office I thought I would be in. I love the culture of the women in the office, and everyone is treated equally. We all get lunch together every day, and we can talk about things outside of work, as well as joke about the work environment to lighten everyone's day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more days in my week to dedicate to this internship - if I could have interned here over the Summer I would have been so happy! I am a full-time student, so can only work two full days a week.

Advice

Ask questions! It sounds so simple, but the women in this office seem very intrigued by the questions that we have, and love to share their experiences and help as much as they can. Come prepared to learn - always take notes while working and when people are explaining things because it moves very fast.
