Graduate Research Assistant

Alce su Voz (ASV) is a community-based initiative at Wichita State University whose mission is to improve health equity for speakers of Spanish and Indigenous languages in the U.S. We currently have programs in healthcare language access, civic engagement, and vaccine equity. We are also about to begin a new pandemic oral history project and we will be conducting filmed interviews in Spanish and Indigenous languages.

ASV plans to hire two graduate students in Fall 2024 to assist with these projects. We seek applicants who are familiar with both Spanish and English and committed to linguistic social justice.

Graduate students with any combination of the following skills are encouraged to apply: videography, social media marketing, Spanish language interviewing, and research/writing. We are especially interested in hiring students who have familiarity with Mayan languages.

All ASV student assistants help out at our community events, which take place on evenings and weekends, and they are also assigned to tasks within their specific area(s) of expertise.

The positions are 20 hrs./wk. and include tuition assistance.

Dr. Showstack, the director of Alce su Voz, is a well-known scholar in the field of applied linguistics and has extensive experience with research and publication. Graduate research assistants have the opportunity collaborate with and receive mentorship from Dr. Showstack and deliver presentations at professional conferences.

To apply for a GRA position with ASV, please submit a cover letter, resume, and the names and contact information of three professional references to Dr. Rachel Showstack via Handshake by Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
