Teacher Assistant-WSU Child Development Center

A teacher assistant will interact with the children and encourage their involvement in the activities, assist the children with their behavior by using positive discipline and Conscious Discipline consistent with that of the Lead Teacher and the WSU CDC’s policies and procedures, help care for, love and teach the children at the CDC while providing a nurturing and helpful environment for the children and help them become independent.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Maintain positive Child Development Center licensure compliance in the assigned classroom in keeping with Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations.
  • Provide supervision and classroom leadership for the general welfare and individual needs of enrolled children and their families. Provide quality child care and education services per the lead teacher’s guidance.
  • Assist with general housekeeping tasks
  • Help prepare needed materials as requested by the lead teacher.
  • Attend an initial series of teacher assistant training sessions, which are: CPR/First Aid, How to Support Breast Feeding (online class), Foundations for Safe and Healthy Early Care Facilities Module 1 & 2 (online class) and any additional staff in-services. 
  • Required are:
16 in-service hours per licensing year are required.
Health Assessment
10 hours of Volunteer service (usually done by attending a Kid’s Night Out event held
every month and parent involvement activities held in the evenings)
KBI background check & fingerprinting
Negative TB test
  • Help the children develop social skills by modeling appropriate behavior and encouraging interaction with others.
  • Assist the lead teacher in carrying out activities for the group and offer suggestions and information about the children.
  • Exhibit a cooperative and supportive attitude in the classroom.

CURRICULUM RESPONSIBILITIES 
  •  Participates with the Lead Teacher in the overall planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate written daily and weekly activities.
  • Interact with the children and encourage their involvement in approved activities warmly, calmly and unhurriedly.
  • At times may lead an activity, circle time or lesson

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participate in professional in-service and educational growth opportunities including attendance at any required in-service.
  • Promote a quality working environment through cooperation and mutual consideration.
  • Arrive to work on time every time. Find Coverage when appropriate or needed.
  • Wear WSU apparel and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Use Conscious Discipline with the children
  • Be actively involved in all aspect of the classroom inside and outside with the children
  • Get down on the child’s level at all times.
  • No use of cell phones while working

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain daily verbal contact with parents.
  • Present a positive, inviting image of the room and program to both parents and children.
  • Direct parents with concerns, issues or questions to the Lead Teacher or the Director for answers and solutions.
  • Respect each family’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
  •  Attend classroom and family involvement activities. Support Center-wide activities, fundraisers, etc.

COMMUNITY/PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILTIES
  • Communicate the CDC philosophy and goals to center visitors and to other community programs and organizations.
  • Participate in appropriate early childhood professional organizations and conferences/workshops as a liaison for the CDC to enhance professional growth and development. 
  • Attend parent involvement activities.
  • Other Duties as Assigned by Director

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Child Development Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. year round, except for designated state holidays. The Teacher Assistant will work with the Director in setting a schedule based on their availability and class schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to meet in-service hours.
This position includes lifting children, equipment and/or supplies (up to 40 lbs.); regular outdoor activity; moving quickly to supervise or assist children; regular hand washing; careful visual and auditory monitoring at a distance for safe supervision of all children; and will include sitting on the floor or child-sized furniture.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND LIMITS OF AUTHORITY:         
The Teacher Assistant reports directly to the Lead Teacher in their assigned classroom, the Assistant Director, and the Center Director. 

Benefits: Not a benefits-eligible position. Teacher Assistants can work up to 30 hours in a semester and up to 40 hours during the winter break, spring Break, and summer.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN 30-60 DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT
  1. CPR / First Aid
  2. Current Health Assessment including negative TB test
  3. KBI screen and fingerprinting
  4. Online classes; How to Support Breastfeeding and Foundations for Safe and Healthy Early
  5. Care Facilities Module 1 & 2

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION
  1.      6 months prior experience working with children
