High School/Middle School Tutor - TRIO Talent Search

Job Description: Work in a classroom setting with middle and high school students. Assist with coursework in math, science, English, or history. Math is a high need for 6-12th grade students.

 

Work Locations:  (You will be assigned one high school and/or one middle school) North High School, West High School, Southeast High School, Hamilton Middle School, Curtis Middle School, Jardine Middle School, and the TRIO Talent Search Office at Brennan Hall 1 on the WSU campus.

Essential Duties

  • Guide middle and high school students (6-12th grade) through in-class lectures and assignments using various collaborative & questioning techniques to complete their work on their own and help them become more independent learners.
  • Help students learn the appropriate study skills and strategies to be successful in their coursework.
  • Work with program staff and school contacts to meet the needs of middle school and/or high school students.
  • Read and understand Tutor Policies and Procedures Handbook.
  • Attend all tutor trainings, meetings, and other planned events during the semester.
  • Maintain accurate records of time, services provided, and administer evaluations when appropriate.
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including timesheets and tutoring summaries, on time.
  • Must appear for all scheduled appointments on time and be dressed appropriately.

 

Qualifications

  • **Must have a reliable vehicle to travel to assigned middle and/or high school**
  • Current enrollment at WSU, Freshman-Graduate level.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must be willing to work at least one FULL academic year (Aug-May).
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students (low income and/or first-generation students).
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Maintain confidentiality of program materials and student information.
  • Ability to provide guidance, support, and motivation for others.
  • Perform job tasks in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Must have an interest in helping students succeed academically.

 

Other Information

  • Availability for 20 hours/week between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday – Friday, with room for flexibility.
  • Salary will be $10.00 per hour.
  • Will need to complete FERPA training and other ethical practices upheld up WSU.
