NIAR Machine Shop AMP Student Assistant

NIAR's Research Machine Shop is looking for a student assistant.

This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”. Information will need to be collected in this regard, but will only be used to ensure compliance with U.S. export control laws. Responsibilities:
·       Follow safety requirements, and handle materials appropriately and safely.
·       Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
·       Perform all other duties as assigned by Shop Supervisor, Assistant and/or Management.
·       Strong desire to learn the machining trade.
·       Maintain a clean and organized work area.
·       Problem-solving skills in order to detect issues in the creation process and find solutions to ensure the machinery creates the product provided in the draft
·       Sets up tooling as instructed.
·       Ability to perform Essential Functions in a changing work environment.
·       Ability to learn how to safely and properly use gauges, calipers, and other tools and equipment.
·       Strong attention to detail and focus on quality and accuracy.
·       Communicate with Shop Supervisor and/or Supervisor Assistant to resolve machining, quality and safety issues;
·       Physical strength and stamina; must be able to stand for consecutive hours at a time.
·       Makes sure shop is clean and clear of foreign object debris (FOD).

Requirements:
·       Strong mechanical ability.
·       Detail oriented and self-motivated.
·       Team player
·       Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and able to stand/walk for shift.
·       Consistently demonstrate a high level of hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity when performing finishing operations such as filing, deburring, abrasive-blasting, parts cleaning, handling and packaging. This must be accomplished without scratches, blemishes or other imperfections, even when visible only under magnification.
·       Pay close daily attention to the cleanliness of the equipment, workbench, tools, accessories and surrounding areas and strive to maintain these in the condition required.
·       Ensure material is at the machine and that maintenance responsibilities are performed in a proper and timely manner.
·       Ensure that parts are efficiently and accurately inspected, deburred, properly tagged and moved to the next operation.
·       Understand basic CNC machine operation as it applies to cleaning, filter change, lubrication and other maintenance purposes.
·       Responsible for organizing and cleaning workstations daily, including the machine, bar feeder, bench, computer, mats and floor.
·       The workbench, tabletop and inspection equipment must be cleaned each day as described.
