NIAR Crash Lab/Advanced Virtual Engineering & Test Lab (AVET) Student Assistant

Students working in the Virtual Engineering Lab will be part of the Advanced Virtual Engineering and Testing group. AVET is interested in students who would like to learn Finite Element Methods and all the associated tasks that come with it (full-scale, component, and coupon level testing). Primarily, students will provide support for the development of Finite Element models for different programs. Students will be trained on the different software tools and provided with several tutorials to master them. Additionally, students will support the preparation of crash tests for aerospace, military, and automotive seats, components, and vehicles in the Crash Dynamic laboratory, as well as mechanical, material, and component testing in the Building Block laboratory. This position will be a mix of computational work and hands-on experimental work.

This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Person”. Duties:
• CAD geometry clean-up and preparation for numerical analysis
• Geometry discretization and mesh generation
• Numerical model documentation and quality check
• Installing fixtures and test articles on the testing equipment
• Aiding lab customers in test article preparation
• Supporting research and help documenting for mechanical testing
• Moving and lifting large items by hand and hoist
• Maintaining a clean and safe work environment

Qualifications:
• Currently working towards a Major in Engineering (Aerospace, Biomedical, Electrical, and Mechanical preferred)
• Willing to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters and 40 hours per week during summer break
• Proficiency with hand and power tools
• Strong attention to detail
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work in a team oriented environment
