NIAR Student Assistant - Advanced Manufacturing Development
As part of NIAR’s Advanced Manufacturing Development group, you will research the ideation, maturation, design, and analysis of advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The group conducts research for a wide array of customers and engages in applied research and advanced technology development. Examples include components fabricated via additive manufacturing (including material extrusion, powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, sheet lamination) and emerging composite structures and technologies.
This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”. Information will need to be collected in this regard, but will only be used to ensure compliance with U.S. export control laws. Preferred applicant is a freshman or sophomore majoring in Engineering (any qualified applicant may apply).
- Basic understanding of advanced materials, manufacturing processes, and an interest in it as a potential career.
- Ability to work with CATIA, Siemens NX, or other CAD/CAM packages.
- Working knowledge of programming languages such as VBA, C+, and MATLAB.
- Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis for stress analysis and thermal analysis.
- Knowledge of fatigue and fracture mechanisms.
- Basic understanding of polymers, metallurgy, phase diagrams, and basic grain structures.
- Ability to work with and understand complex systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Self-motivated and able to work without constant supervision.
- Enthusiastic and willing to learn from a variety of specialists in the field of additive manufacturing, composites, and material testing.
- Interest in additive manufacturing (3D printing) and managing complex research projects.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Strong communication skills both verbally and through written work.
- Available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
