NIAR Machinist/Composite Lab Assistant

NIAR - Composites is looking for 2 student assistants with basic CAD and machine experience to assist in the machine shop at NIAR. Engineering major is preferred, but all majors within any technical/handy skill will be considered.

This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”. Information will need to be collected in this regard, but will only be used to ensure compliance with U.S. export control laws. Criteria:
  • GPA: 2.75+
  • Year: Freshman/Sophomore
  • Availability: 4-5 Days a week
  • Engineering Degree

Job Responsibilities:
  • Design, model and machine composite coupons, as well at metallic fixtures
  • Build parts and work with top of the line CNC machines
  • Assist staff with certain responsibilities that are required
  • Organizing parts and shelving materials
  • Lifting heavy metallic parts
  • Labelling test coupons

 Required skills:
  • At least one CAD course, or some experience with CAD
  • Understanding basic composite orientation
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage workflow based on expectations
  • Ability to work independently and along with other colleagues
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 25 hours per week
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends, if necessary
  • Lifting a minimum of 50lbs

Preferred Skills:
  • Proficient in CATIA V5/3DE Design, Mastercam or Solidworks
  • Demonstrated understanding of machining
  • Showing desire to learn and get along with a group
