Student marketing communication intern

Job Summary
20-hour per week paid position in Strategic Communications, the official communication and marketing office for WSU. Skills must include writing, interviewing, idea generation and editing, with special consideration for videography and photography skills. This is a hands-on position where you will be provided guidance as you improve on your existing skills and learn new ones in a team environment. A collaborative, self-starting attitude is a must.
 
In this position, you will learn and improve skills in:
 
·      Writing, updating and editing feature stories and news releases for the media, web and social media
·      Strategizing and producing video and photo content for the media, web and social media
·      Helping develop marketing plans for campus clients
·      Working on basic branded template Adobe InDesign projects for ads and event materials
·      Assisting with special events by coordinating logistics with on-and off-campus vendors, managing content for special event web pages and operations to set up and execute on event days
 
Responsibilities
·      Interview students, faculty/staff and produce written/video stories, news releases and social media posts about applied learning, student life, research, activities, student profiles and trends happening at Wichita State, with the goal of promoting and advocating for the university, from small one-time projects to full university marketing campaigns.
·      Assist with editing news releases, newsletters and other copy. We follow the AP Style Guide, as well as WSU’s visual standards.
·      Take photos and video to accompany story content.
·      Assist with social media planning and implementation of written and visual content.
·      Assist in the creation of communication plans.
·      Assist with updating and editing pages on the WSU website.
·      Assist with general office help, including answering the phone over the lunch hour, responding to walk-in traffic and running on-campus errands.
·      Assist with special events.
·      Assist in advertising.
·      Other duties as directed.
 
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualifications
Required:
·      Availability for 20 hours per week between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. (Occasional evening/weekend hours may be needed for campus events.)
·      Currently enrolled as a full-time student at WSU.
·      Must be proficient with English grammar.
·      Excellent journalistic and marketing writing skills with an interest in advocating for and promoting WSU.
·      Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
·      Attention to detail and ability to ensure that deadlines and other project requirements are met.
·      Comfortable conducting in-person interviews.
·      Ability to work with diverse publics and relate positively with others including faculty, staff and students at all levels.
·      Self-motivated team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
·      Strong editing skills, using AP Stylebook and the university’s style guide.
·      The ability to listen carefully and build positive relationships.
·      Professional appearance for events.
·      Basic skills with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
 
Preferred:
·      Experience in writing news stories, news releases and features.
·      Pursuit of a degree in public relations, marketing, journalism or a similar field.
·      Experience with professional social media.
·      Experience with video story telling.
·      Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
·      Experience using Adobe InDesign software to update branded templates such as ads, invitations, signs for print, digital, and social media.
·      Experience working in a professional office setting.
